Norfolk Beekeepers 2013 Training Seminars

Norfolk Beekeepers (NB) in partnership with Tidewater Beekeepers Association (TBA) will present a two day Beginning Beekeepers Training Seminar and a one day Intermediate Beekeepers Training Seminar at Old Dominion University in Constance Hall (first floor).

Beekeeping 101: Beginning Beekeepers Seminar

Friday (2/15/2013) from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM and continues Saturday (2/16/2013) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This seminar consists of lectures: Planting a Bee Friendly Yard or Garden; Honey Bee Biology-Seasonal Hive Management; Beekeeping Equipment Choices and Uses; Meet your State Apiarist-Buying or Selling Honeybees & State Required Inspections; Swarming-keeping your bee's in their hive; Getting Started in Beekeeping "The Myths and Rumors"; as well as hands-on break-out sessions where beekeepers at the Demonstration tables will be available to “Talk Bee’s” as they discuss the latest beekeeping techniques and answer all of your questions. This course fulfils the educational requirement of six (6) hours of classroom instruction in Introductory Beekeeping training for the qualified level of the Virginia Master Beekeeper Program. This seminar was developed for those interested with 0-3 years of experience.

Cost: $30.00 per person or $45.00 per couple (with 1 set of books) includes Notes From The Bee Yard handout, MAAREC Publication Beekeeping Basics, VMBP Qualified Level Study Outline, recommended reading and reference list for new beekeepers, as well as homemade refreshments and lunch on Saturday and a five-month Norfolk Beekeepers or Tidewater Beekeepers Association membership from February 2013 to June 30, 2013.

Beekeeping 201: Intermediate Beekeepers Seminar:

Join us Saturday (2/16/2013) from 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. This seminar consists of lectures: Mechanics of Queen Rearing including Instrumental Insemination techniques;"Bee Yard Sweat Equity"-The Road to Gaining/Sharing Knowledge; Honey Bee Biology; Honey Bee Pests and Diseases; Swarms and Swarm Prevention; Maximizing your Honey Production; and Nuc Production for Sustainable Beekeeping. These seminar training objectives were developed for those beekeepers with 4+ years of beekeeping experience who have mastered the art of successfully maintaining their hives. Seating is limited to 35 beekeepers!!

Cost: $35.00 per person includes all handouts and presentation talking points as well as homemade refreshments, and lunch on Saturday.
