VSBA Master Beekeeper Program

Participation

All participants must be a member in good standing of Virginia State Beekeepers Association.  All of the testing is conducted within Virginia. Written testing is conducted during the annual spring and fall membership conferences. At the present time, there is a cost for each level of the program. All funds will be used to manage the program.

Requirements summary for each level: SUBJECT TO CHANGE (this is a brief review-full details provided in January-February 2014)

Virginia Apprentice Beekeeper: Cost $25.00 for the written and practical testing.

Entry level for the program:

  1. Written test.
  2. Practical test which involves demonstrating a routine hive inspection.
  3. Three years of beekeeping experience managing 2 or more hives.
  4. Annual completion of 10 hours of approved volunteer community service relating to honeybees and beekeeping and 8 hours of approved advanced (learning) training.   

Virginia Journeyman Beekeeper: Cost $25.00 for the written and practical testing.

 Second level for the program:

  1. Written test.
  2. Practical test which also includes identification of various tools, objects, and pictures relating to honey bee biology and beekeeping.
  3. Three years of beekeeping experience after the Apprentice level is completed and managing 5+ hives.
  4. Annual completion of 20 hours of approved volunteer community service relating to honeybees and beekeeping and 8 hours of approved advanced (learning) training. Must be mentoring other beekeepers.

Virginia Master Beekeeper: Cost $50.00 for the written and practical testing.

Final level for the program:  For the beekeeper, who has demonstrated extensive expertise in honeybee biology, queen rearing, and a number of other specialized areas of beekeeping.

  1. Written test and oral interview by a panel.
  2. Practical test which includes demonstrate excellence in selected beekeeping specialties.
  3. 6 years of beekeeping experience, completion of the Apprentice & Journeyman level managing up to 50 hives. Hives can be owned by other beekeepers you are mentoring.   
  4. Annual completion of 40 hours of approved volunteer community service relating to honeybees and beekeeping and 8 hours of approved advanced (learning) training.  Must be developing and teaching beekeeping classes and mentoring other beekeepers.
