New Honey Profile Wheel Developed by UC Davis

Those of you interested in being able to distinguish between varying honey types now have a great resource at your fingertips. The Entomology department at UC Davis has developed a Honey Profile Wheel that uses tangible senses such as taste and scent to determine type, quality, and other features of honey. It also makes suggestions as to how to pair with food and beverages to bring out the best quality of the honey you produce. Additionally, it will serve as an excellent academic tool in distinguishing between mono and poly floral honey.

Due to the range of flowering plants in Virginia, the ability to distinguish between varying types can be a challenge. Familiarizing yourself with the phenology of flowering plants can help with determining the likelihood of what plants your bees are sourcing.
